How we calculate this

See methodology
  1. Multiply original price by the discount percentage to get the discount amount.
  2. Subtract the discount amount from the original price to get the sale price.
  3. Use the same discount percentage as the savings percentage.

Formula

Discount amount Original price × Discount % / 100
Sale price Original price - Discount amount

Worked example

If the original price is $120 and the discount is 25%, here is the result.

  1. Discount amount is $120 × 25% = $30.
  2. Sale price is $120 - $30 = $90.
  3. Savings percentage is 25.00%.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can discount percentage be more than 100%?

No. A discount above 100% would push the sale price below zero, which is not a normal sale.

Is sale price the same as margin?

No. Discounting changes the selling price, but margin depends on cost as well.

Can I use this for service discounts too?

Yes. The same percentage discount math applies to services as long as you start with the original price.
